New Zealand’s Green Lipped Mussel

The planktons that grow naturally in the seas of New Zealand have undergone unique evolution in reaction to the strong Ultraviolet rays.

Green Lipped Mussels feed on this plankton, and have been proven to contain substances that are not usually found in mussels grown in other areas – namely Omega unsaturated fatty acid which has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties.


The Origin of New Zealand Green Lipped Mussel research:
During a research that studied the occurrence of arthritis in the Maori population of New Zealand it was found that the occurrence differed quite markedly between Maori populations of different regions.
The populations which had the least occurrences were living close to the beach and consumed large amounts of Green Lipped Mussel, while the populations with greater occurrence of arthritis were living inland, further away from the beach, and therefore consumed much less Green Lipped Mussel.
This led to the question of the relationship between the occurrence of Arthritis and Green Lipped Mussel consumption.
